In Torrance, south of Los Angeles, about 25 miles from the predominantly Asian city of Monterey Park, a white pickup truck believed to be the suspect was blocked in front and behind by armored police vehicles at the scene of the dance hall shooting. .
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna announced earlier that law enforcement has launched a manhunt to find the perpetrator of the attack, whose motive is still unknown.

“It’s really sad,” said Ken Nim, who walked his dog early in the morning. “It’s the first time they’ve held a festival since the pandemic,” an IT company worker who has lived in Monterey Park for more than two decades told AFP. This residential suburb, which he calls “normally a place where not much happens.”
Investigators were also checking reports of a possible connection to an attempted shooting at another dance hall in nearby Alhambra that same evening. “An Asian suspect entered the dance hall with a gun, which was knocked out of his hands before he fled,” said Sheriff Robert Luna. The weapon found was not an assault rifle, he said.
