Street Fighter 6 developers had to fend off Capcom management to get all the features and content they wanted

The story of video game development is usually one of compromise. Whether due to technical constraints, time constraints, budget, or a combination of the three.

Sometimes, however, proprietary games come out of an environment where these restrictions are removed, and that seems to be what the Street Fighter 6 development team had to fight for behind the scenes.

“It took us time to get some people — the decision makers — outside the team to explain why these new features are important,” said Nakayama. “We’re trying to achieve a lot more compared to other fighting games, but we want Street Fighter 6 to be important and perhaps a gateway for a lot of people to be involved and excited about a fighting match.”

Those with their boots on the ground certainly want to do everything they can to avoid the disaster of Street Fighter 5’s launch, but it’s also easy to see why Capcom is so reluctant to give them everything they ask for.

Hell, they recently revealed that SF5 was originally planned for 6 seasons of DLC before being scaled back to 4 – then greenlighted for a fifth season following the success of the Champion Edition.

Fortunately for everyone, it looks like we won’t really hear about management’s involvement in this particular project.

“It’s very rare for matches to pay off as they were able to deliver everything the team aspired to,” said Tsuchiya. “There is always some sort of compromise that needs to be made or ideas that should have been scrapped due to budget, schedule, and resource issues. But at this time, in terms of the core things that Nakayama-san wanted to accomplish with his dream project, it seems like we didn’t really have to make any kind of omissions. or assignments of that title.”

We’ve seen the team take new steps with the franchise such as giving players the ability to create custom avatars to roam and interact with the all-new Battle Hub as well as the largest chunk of single-player content Street Fighter has already seen with the SF6 World Tour.

Game Informer makes it sound like Capcom’s leadership is behind their entire fighting game team now, and perhaps all the positive attention SF6 has received so far will help assuage any remaining doubts.

Whether or not Street Fighter 6 will end up achieving its goal of revitalizing the series and potentially taking it to new heights remains to be seen.

But it’s nice to know that there’s a group of people building SF6 that really care about what Street Fighter is all about and why it’s important to do it right.
