Baltimore Ravens Midfielder Jaylon Ferguson has passed away at the age of 26 Announcing the team Wednesday. Ferguson was a third-round pick for the Ravens in 2019 who made his way into the NFL by becoming a star player for Louisiana Tech. In three seasons with the Ravens, Ferguson has made 67 tackles and 4.5 sacks.

Ferguson was the 2018 USA Defensive Player of the Year and earned All-C-USA First Team Honors on two separate occasions—while setting school and NCAA records in the process.

After earning MVP honors at the 2018 Hawaii Bowl, the Louisiana native was selected by the Ravens in the 2019 NFL Draft as the 85th overall pick, having spent three seasons in Baltimore and impressed the city. The Ravens issued the following statement after Ferguson’s death:

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of Gaylon Ferguson. He was a kind and respectful young man with a big smile and an infectious personality. Our heartfelt condolences go to the Gillon family and friends as we mourn a life lost so much so soon.”

Baltimore police told the Baltimore Sun newspaper, that Baltimore police officers responded to reports of a suspicious death at a home at 400 Block of Elchester Street in Baltimore’s Harwood neighborhood where they found Ferguson unresponsive and receiving treatment from doctors.

“Ferguson never regained consciousness and paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene,” Baltimore Police spokeswoman Nikki Fenoy said in a statement.

Police said there were no signs of trauma or tampering. They said the coroner would determine the cause of death.
