Among infants infected with Covid-19, 16 percent of mothers were vaccinated during pregnancy, compared to 32 percent of mothers of hospitalized babies without the virus.
The researchers found that vaccination during the first 20 weeks of pregnancy was 32 percent effective against hospitalization associated with Covid-19 for infants, while subsequent vaccination was 80 percent effective.
But due to the relatively small sample size, more research is needed to determine the optimal timing of vaccination during pregnancy and whether a booster during pregnancy may provide similar protection for infants whose mothers have already received the first set of vaccinations.
“For now, we want to make sure that we protect both the mother and the baby, and once a pregnant woman is ready to be vaccinated, we recommend going ahead and doing it,” Dr. Mini Delman said.
“Unfortunately, vaccinating children under the age of six months is not currently on the horizon,” she added.
The study was also not large enough to determine whether vaccinating mothers equally protected against Delta, which was the dominant variant when the study began, and Omicron, which had displaced Delta by the time the research ended.
