San Francisco 49ers The quarterback, who was initially ruled out for the rest of the season after breaking his foot in Sunday’s win over Miami DolphinYou don’t need foot surgery after all, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

If rehab goes well, Garoppolo can Return in seven to eight weeks — which would put him back in the mix in time for the qualifying round.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that Wednesday, saying there is little chance Garoppolo will ever return to the playoffs. Shanahan said he’s not optimistic about that happening, but he didn’t completely rule out a return for Garoppolo.

Garoppolo was carried off the field on SundayCoach Kyle Shanahan said afterwards that he had broken “a few things” in his foot. The initial thought was that Garoppolo, which replaced the initiator Tri Lance Early in the season after he got off it was going to be done for the season.

That paved the way for the former Iowa State star Brock Purdy, who led the 49ers to a 33-17 victoryto end the season.

While the news on Garoppolo is certainly promising, there’s no guarantee he’ll be ready to hit the field by the end of the year. Purdy has yet to lead the 49ers deep into the postseason — they lead the NFC West, and would be the third seed in the NFC if the playoffs start today — for Garoppolo he has a team to go back to. And of course, that is if his rehabilitation goes smoothly and he’s able to pick up right where he left off.

Garoppolo, 31, has thrown for 2,437 yards and 16 touchdowns with 4 interceptions in 11 games this season. Seven weeks would propel them into the Divisional Round, making the NFC Championship Game more likely for a return date if all goes well.
